About
Information in the corporate structure is a basic resource that is available to managers. Thus recognizing that information is a resource, it follows that information should be managed in much the same way as other resources, such as money, material, machines and personnel. This course covers all the aspects of information management, such as data gathering, information processing, dissemination, and updating.
Pre-requisite Course: MG-101
Course Objectives:
Upon successful completion of the course, the students should have attained information system literacy – that is, students must have gained a basic understanding of the value and uses of information technology in information systems for business operations, managerial decision making, and competitive advantage. This objective demands that the students understand the role of the computer as a problem-solving tool.
Specifically, students are expected to be able to:
- Explain why information is an organizational resource of strategic importance that must be managed, and that the computer can cultivate that resource.
- Understand basic system concepts and how a computer system evolves through a life cycle, and recognize the role played by the manager and information specialist.
- Know the various types of computer-based systems and how they evolved.
- Analyze problems and situations and propose solutions to case studies given at the end of each chapter.
- Conduct systems study of real-world business information system and be able to present the group research paper in class.

Methodology:
The major source of information will be the textbook. This material will provide students with a good understanding of the important topics in the MIS field. As students read the assigned textbook material, they should pay particular attention to the discussion topics, the problem, and the case studies at the end of the chapters, which will be discussed in class. As the material is very conceptual, PowerPoint presentation slides will be shown whenever possible, to provide visual framework and reinforce learning. Research work using internet is required to supplement knowledge acquired in class. A group paper will be presented and submitted at the end of the course. Long examinations, graded recitation, and short quizzes, will be given to test acquisition of knowledge.
Course Requirements:
Written long tests, unannounced quizzes, case problems, graded recitations, a group research paper on real-world application system to be presented to the class during the final exam period.
