CA-112 orients the students on the principles and practical applications of various research methods in the major areas of communication, with special reference to Philippine communication problems
Course Description:
The course orients the students on the principles and practical application of research methods in major areas of communication, with special emphasis on Philippine communication problems.
Course Objectives:
At the end of the course, the student should be able to:
1. Understand the nature of scientific inquiry and scientific method.
2. Acquire basic understanding and skills in conducting a research by applying social research methods to current problems in Philippine communication situation.
3. Appreciate the relationship between theory and research.
4. Identify a research problem and structure it scientifically in the form of a research proposal.
5. Carry out a series of research exercises: questionnaire making, pre-testing, interviewing, observing, testing, coding, and tabulating, analyzing, writing, among others.
Value Aims:
The student is expected to:
1. Acquire a logical and systematic method of thinking which is essential in any scientific inquiry.
2. Value the importance of patience and precision in gathering and reporting results.
3. Develop moral integrity and intellectual honesty in the conduct of various activities related to the course.
4. Become a responsible citizen and communicator who is committed to serve the nation and to promote positive Filipino values through her involvement in various communication endeavors.
5. Learn, practice, and follow the ethics in conducting and reporting research.
Methodology:
1. Lectures will be given by the instructor at the beginning of the course. The succeeding readings or topics will be assigned to groups who will report on these. Guest lecturers will also be invited. Lectures and reports will be followed by discussions.
2. Based on current events, requirements may be added or changed.
3. The references to be used in this course will be available at the Reserved Section of the College Library. Handouts* will be periodically distributed to facilitate lectures.
4. In the event of unforeseen suspension of classes, the student must read the topics stated in the course outline.

Course Requirements:
Each student must:
- Take part in group and individual research and presentation of reports;
- Participate actively in class discussion;
- Pass quizzes, long examinations, and graded recitations;
- Attend class regularly and not exceed the allowed number of cuts when it is necessary for her to be absent;
- Pass the written preliminary examination;
- Submit an individual article review on any one of those given below;

Grading System:
· Class Standing (2/3) + Preliminary examination grade (1/3) = MIDTERM MARK
· Midterm Mark (2/3) + Research proposal (1/3) = TERM MARK
· Class Standing: attendance/attitude in class/assignments/class participation/group and individual reports/quizzes.
