CA-108 focuses on the principles and practices of journalism, which involves a discussion of the functions of the newspaper: the sequence of news, news gathering and reporting, publication, editorial policies and standards, etc. The emphasis of the courseis on Philippine Journalism.
Course Description:
This course is a study of the principles and practices of Philippine Journalism covering discussion of the functions of newspapers, sequence of news (from news gathering to publication, editorial policies and standards) among others.
The course framework is anchored on the standard of Journalistic excellence –truth, accuracy, fairness, objectivity, editorial integrity, balance, good grammar and analytical writing
Course Objectives:
At the end of the course, the students will:
- Understand and use the principles and techniques of local print journalism ;
- Write and edit different types of news stories, feature articles, column, editorial and a news feature as well as take photojournalistic picture;
- Apply the lessons learned in the course to produce a news publication;
- Understand and appreciate the social responsibility of being a journalism student of Miriam’s Communication Arts and Advertising Department.
Value Aims:
The students will develop a good sense of newsworthiness and balance in the treatment of journalistic materials as well as appreciate and develop the right values in the practice of journalism profession.
Methodologies:
Lecture-discussion, research, readings, recitation, reports, class, exercises, assignments and news evaluation and assignment
Course Requirements:
Attend classess regularly, participate in the discussion, submit and pass all requirements.
Grading System :
Midterm Mark = 2/3 Class Standing* + 1/3 Prelim Exam Grade
Final Mark = 1/3 Class Average* + 1/3 Newsletter Grade + 1/3 Creative Writing Project
- 2/3 Class Standing = Activities (A) (Seatwork and Homework; Project; Papers) Quizzes (Q); Class Participation
- 1/3 Class Average = ½ Midterm Mark + ½ Class Standing /2
- ½ Class Standing for 2nd half of the sem = ¼ A & Q + ¼ Class Participation + 2/4 Journal + 15% of Grade of Optional Paper*
